Meeting Trinity

So last Thursday I set off for Colorado to meet my niece Trinity Grace Rahn. It seemed like it would be an easy trip, nonstop from Salt Lake City to Denver. Since I was flying Southwest I decided to check a bag so I could bring things back with me. Unfortunately, the bag went to Seattle. At 10pm that night mom and I were in Walmart trying to find an outfit for me to wear the next day. Limited options to say the least. We finally got something worked out and headed for home.

Friday afternoon we headed over to Chris and Amber's house to meet Trinity. It turns out she is even more adorable in person than she is in her pictures. I know I'm biased but its true! This is the picture shortly after we met each other. She likes to study the new faces and try to place you. At least I'm hoping that is why she looks puzzled.

We spent the afternoon and dinner at the house with the family. I am sure it is just because I'm a proud aunt but I even enjoyed watching her sleep. And she makes the best faces. Trinity has already perfected the one you give your dad when he's being stupid. Good thing, she'll need it to survive our family, especially her dad. Trinity only cries when she is hungry. When she starts she screws up her face and sticks out her lower lip. I told her that was a good start but she needed to have her Aunt Katie teach her how to do it even better.

It was a wonderful weekend of spending time with the whole family. Before I left on Monday I stopped by to say good bye and just held Trinity while she slept until we had to go. It was hard to leave. Turns out I should have stayed. Meeting Trinity was a blessing, but the trip home was an adventure from hell. My direct flight to Salt Lake City turned out to be anything but direct. We were slightly delayed when our flight left Denver but nothing too bad. Then they came on to announce that the storm in SLC was going to delay our landing and we didn't have the fuel to wait. So they chose to continue on to the next stop in Boise, ID. When we landed I called my roommate Kat to see if she had made the trip down to the airport. Sadly, she had. I had to tell her that I was in Boise and encouraged her to go home. Fortunately they decided to turn us around after refueling and send us back to Salt Lake City. This time we were allowed to land. I hadn't been sure if Kat would stay or go since she wanted company on the ride back up the canyon. Turned out she had left and barely made it home.

I grabbed a shuttle that picked up pretty soon after I had my luggage. Then came the first bit of bad news. They wouldn't go up the hill to our house. Kat said she would wait for me at the grocery store since she needed a plow to come through before she could get home. The van headed toward the canyon only to be stopped by policeman and flares. We did a loop back toward the airport to drop someone off and pick up snacks in case it was a long night. When we got back to the canyon it was open again. The drive up wasn't too bad for us but we passed a lot of people who had slid off. By the time we got to my exit Kat had given in and headed home. Since there was no way I was going to make it up the hill on my own the driver said he would get a 4 wheel drive SUV and get me home after dropping off the others. On the way out of the grocery store parking lot we got stuck. The guys in the van had to get out and push. Thank goodness for them! We got all of them dropped off at their locations and went for the SUV. Our amazing driver Jeff dropped off another woman at her house and then took me back to my neighborhood. He was able to get me all the way up to our driveway. Since our driveway is a nightmare on a good day I thanked him and walked down. I made a great path through the snow with my suitcase. It was up to my knees! At close to 3am I finally made it in to my room.

On April 5-6th we received about 4 feet of new snow. The plows did not even make it through our neighborhood the next day until mid afternoon. You have to love spring in Utah! And that was my adventure to and from Colorado to meet Trinity Grace Rahn.
